Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make the Palooza
the fabulous success it was. We know volunteering is difficult in our
busy lives, but you came through for Franklin once again, and our kids
are the winners, because of it. I can't begin to list everyone, but you all know who you are:
Room Parents!! We called on you daily and you never let us down. People getting donations People giving donations Preparing Food Setting up the Auction room, the Disco and the Food Area Working the Auction room, the Disco and the Food Area during the event And of course, breaking it all down!
Thank
you to all the Chairs, some of whom have been working for months,
preparing for this great day. As you can see, it truly "takes a
village" to create such an event!

Dr. Kristen K. Murphy, Ed.D, Principal of King Middle School, spoke at our monthly parent meeting Tuesday night, and it was extremely informative! We
learned about their 1 to 1 Technology Learning Program, how they've
incorporated personalized Learning Environments into their curriculum
and their After -school enrichment programs. We learned about
each and every class that was available for all the grades, both
academic and elective and the class schedules for each grade; about the
magnet programs and what to do to apply for them; and we even learned
about the dress code and why they elected to have it. There was a
question/answer period afterwards and we were fortunate enough to be
able to ask 4 students of King, that were alumni of Franklin, all about
life in Middle school, and it was both humorous and fascinating. If you were unable to make the meeting, but would like more information about King, please feel free to email Contact Tomas O'Grady at 323 644 1629 or tomasogrady@sbcglobal.net

WE NEED 20-30 MORE FAMILIES TO SIGN UP IN ORDER FOR THEM TO MAKE THE DROP TO FRANKLIN! SO, SIGN UP. Thanks
to all who completed the survey for the produce box program for
Franklin. There was an overwhelming interest in having Franklin be a drop site for produce boxes through an organization called eroots. Please take a moment to check out the site, eroots.org and see if this progam would be of interest to your family. If you already signed up at our FOF meeting last week there is no need to do anything more at this point, we will be in contact with you soon. If you haven't already signed up and would like to do so please contact Ellen Kennedy ellmatt@sbcglobal.netor Aniko Alexovics aniko.alexovics@gmail.com

SILVER LAKE RECREATION CENTER WINTER 2012 YOUTH BASKETBALL
For
the first time in over a decade-- perhaps more-- an organized WINTER
YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE will be coordinated and run out of the gymnasium
right at Thomas Starr King Middle School. They'll practice on weeknights and hold games on Saturdays. Earlier
this year, the Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council's Sports and
Recreation Group, working with Tom LaBonge's Council District 4
spearheaded the allocation of over 13,000 dollars to install new
top-quality backboards and adjustable rims. So, not only do the
students there get to use this new equipment during school hours, but so
does the LACER program, after school. And with these grants, the
L-A-U-S-D, working with Silver Lake Recreation Center have expanded
their recreation leagues to allow more of our kids to play more often,
by expanding to utilize the gym at T.S. King. For kids ages 5 through 15, the league starts in JANUARY and runs through MARCH. However, league registration has
already begun. While organized athletics have been slowly stripped
from of our school budgets from elementary to high schools, the
community and our council member has stepped up to make sure our
children have the same recreation programs available to them as other
families do in other parts of the City.
Please take a look, and let's get our kids playing more sports, here IN our neighborhood. INFO HERE!!!

WASTE FREE LUNCH: Franklin families have
worked hard to have near zero waste Fundraisers, we have worked hard to
eliminate bottled water, we have worked to green our campus with
beautiful plants and trees and now we are ready to take on more… let’s
strive for zero waste during lunch time at Franklin. It’s good for the
environment and it will save us all money. What is a zero waste lunch?
Lunches you pack for your child that creates no garbage. Here are some
easy steps and some websites to visit: 1. Reusable lunch bags - replace the brown bag with something safe and sustainable. Reusable bags are better looking and better for the environment. 2. Food containers -
Wastefreelunches.org estimates that eliminating disposable packaging
and single-serving items can save families $250 a year. Buy in bulk and
use reusable containers to portion out your lunch. 3. Snack and sandwich bags - Sierra
Club estimates that families spend $85 on disposable plastic baggies.
Save money and resources with reusable bags and wraps. 4. Utensils and more - napkins, utensils, even straws! Why throw it away when you can use it again and again? 5. Reusable bottles -
Americans spend about $16 billion annually on bottled water, that's 38
billion plastic bottles in our landfills. Break the wasteful cycle by
bringing your own bottle. http://goodbyn.com/ http://www.theultimategreenstore.com/m-29-obentec-laptop-lunches.aspx http://www.kidskonserve.com/

News Release 10/14/2010
Thomas Starr King Middle School will open a new environmental studies Magnet in the fall of 2011. King Principal, Dr. Kristen Murphy said the entire community rallied round to make the Magnet possible.
“The
community really came out in force to support us on this,” Dr. Murphy
said. “We’re extremely proud and thankful for their support.” Heading the campaign for the new Magnet was parent and educational activist Tomas O’Grady.
“This
is the future of public education,” said O’Grady. “The Principal, the
teachers, the parents and the community all working together to get the
job done. Ordinary people, doing extraordinary things. No photo ops, no
grand announcements, no politicians ...we did it ourselves.”
O’Grady’s
grassroots campaign for the environmental Magnet began with a website:
www.mindyourfootprint.org <http://www.mindyourfootprint.org> ,
which quickly garnered more than 350 letters to the board members of the
Los Angeles Unified District asking for this second Magnet on campus.
O’Grady
is also the founder of Farm Feliz, a local green organization and
President of Friends of King, the first 501-c3 non-profit Parent/teacher
group organization in California with an environmental sustainability
clause <http://www.friendsofking.org/> written into its bylaws.
This
is not the first time Thomas Starr King Middle School has been in the
news recently. The ENTIRE school’s 2010 test scores (API) increased 59
points from 678 to 737, the highest increase of any middle school in the
City of LA and four times the state average. O’Grady points to
these test scores, after school enrichment programs and an organic
garden as all proof that community involvement is the key to Middle
School success. And he believes it can be duplicated throughout all of
LA’s Middle Schools.
“I have this vision of Middle Schools, that
is not unlike a university campus,” he said. “ A place where students of
all aptitudes, economic backgrounds and races can choose between
different disciplines, Magnets, special needs, English learners and
advanced studies, but mingle and interact all on campus.”
“King
is leading the way with an inspirational principal, dedicated teachers
and hands-on parents. You just wait to see what we accomplish next.”

GOT LICE? If
you are stressed out over the lice situation like some of us are, then
maybe this will be of some help. One of our dads, Keith Kurlander,
recommended at the FOF meeting last night, a product that he swears by.
"We tried the Rid shampoo,
olive oil, a lice whisperer, plastic combs and the main thing we found
THAT WORKED everyday was the NIT-FREE metal comb. This comb has micro
barbs that actually pull out the nits (eggs) so that you can see them
when you hold the comb up to the light. It's also good to do the Rid
shampoo or an equivalent once every 8 days, that's the lice hatching
cycle." You can find out more about it here:
